The Midnight Craving
'People who love to eat are always the best people' - Julia Child
Foodies, the ones who are helplessly in love with food. They can't reject food which looks tasty, delicious and mouth-watering. Likewise, they don't have a specific time to eat a distinctive meal. They can eat a proper meal in the middle of night after having dinner, and it won't bother them. They crave peculiar snacks at the most unusual times. Plus; they will do anything to have it. You will hear such stories from foodies of how they sacrificed their sleep and what not, only to get their favorite snack at 3 am. Foodies have bundles of tales to tell about their wonderful adventures relating to the love of food they have.
But lets get to the point, I was about to mention a food adventure of my own.
Exactly three months ago, i was sitting idly in the living room, scrolling on Instagram. Suddenly, a wind blew and awakened my desire to have Cheese cake at the very moment. I got up and marched to the kitchen only to find i did not have the ingredients to make a cheese cake. I went to my mom and told her about the plight i was dealing with. 'Well, why don't you make a strawberry sponge cake with cream cheese instead?' That is an option as well, i thought. Searching through Youtube, i found the best recipe for the most heavenly sponge cake. Eagerly i went to the kitchen, mixed the required ingredients with the beater and put the cake batter in the oven for twenty minutes. About half an hour later, i went to take out the cake and to my surprise, the cake was still the same. Accidentally, i had turned on the grill but not the oven. Life does not always goes your way, especially when you are expecting a perfect outcome. Holding my head in both hands, i screamed (not too loud though). After turning the oven on again I calmed myself, and began with the cream cheese sauce. Thirty minutes into the beating and mixing, the cream was still the same and not of the desired texture. I consulted with my mom again, and she gave me a bowl full of ice to put it beneath my bowl of cream. ' The cream has to be chilled, so that it can reach the level of consistency we want in short period of time. Otherwise you can beat it the whole night and it will be the same'. Thanks mom!
By the time my cake and cream were absolutely ready, it was time for dinner.' I'll assemble it after having dinner, besides i'm starving and the cake can wait'. I told myself.
By 1:30 am, i was reminded about the cake that i intended to assemble right after dinner. Oh god, why does the time passes so quickly?
While everyone was asleep, i tiptoed into the kitchen. What should i do with this? Do i have to decorate it? But i have never done that before. Mom said ' Decorate it however you wish to'. Unfortunately my mind was blank at the moment. Anyhow, i took the largest knife and cut the cake into two rectangular shaped pieces. Took out the chilled Cream cheese sauce from the freezer and spread it onto the piece which was suppose to be the bottom of the cake. Drizzled Hershey's chocolate syrup (chocolate is never enough) added some chocolate chips and strawberry puree. Placing the other half on top, I spilled the rest of cream sauce on the cake, and it looked perfect. Well, no it didn't. The Cake was looking quite empty without any toppings. I racked my brain at a furious rate and, an idea popped in my wonderful mind. There was some leftover puree and cream sauce, when i whisked them together it turned into some delicious strawberry whipped cream. Taking a decorating bag, i wrote the words ' Strawberry Cake' and finished my decoration with multi flavoured sprinkles. 'Looks nice' i thought. Putting my masterpiece in the fridge, i headed to my bedroom at 3 am. But i was proud of what i did.
We had the cake with tea the next day in the evening and everyone enjoyed. Alhumdolillah!
My longing for 'Cheese Cake' pushed me to take the first step, i would have gave up when the cake did not turned out how i wanted but i didn't. Again, sacrificing my sleep i completed what i had started. And it was worth it. Sometimes accidents and emergencies can teach you to create alternatives. They train you to learn new skills and develop new hobbies. And it only serves you or your needs in the future.
My unconditional love for food taught me to be patient, to create and alternatives and to enjoy and be grateful for what i have. Sometimes, simple and meaningless incidents in life teach you greater lessons. Find them, and grasp the magnitude so that it helps you later on in life. :)
Also, I would like to thank my friend who suggested i should write a blog on this topic. @azkajaveria
Besides, I will always enjoy writing about food. :)
Thank you for reading till the end. If you love food as well, share your stories and opinions in the comments below.
